DeckMemo is a study app for iPhone, iPad and Mac made by Justin Sheshagiri Rao. The short version: DeckMemo collects nothing.
What DeckMemo collects
Nothing. DeckMemo has no accounts, no servers, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party SDKs. I never receive your flashcards, Memos, images, drawings, voice dictation, notes, study history, statistics, or any identifier for you or your device. DeckMemo has no AI of its own.
Where your data lives
Everything you create in DeckMemo is stored on your device, in DeckMemo's private app storage, and is included in your normal device backups under Apple's terms.
Optional iCloud sync. If you turn on Settings › iCloud › Sync with iCloud, DeckMemo also stores your library in your own private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit, so it stays the same on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. That data lives in your iCloud account, counts toward your iCloud storage, and is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. I cannot see, access or delete anything in your private iCloud database. Sync is off unless you turn it on.
Widgets and reminders. To show the widget and word the daily reminder, DeckMemo writes a small summary (cards due, today's count, streak, upcoming exam names and dates) to a file shared only between DeckMemo and its own widget on your device. Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device; nothing is sent to a server.
Creating cards with a chatbot (Create with AI)
The AI tab (Create with AI on iPad and Mac) helps you turn notes into cards using a chatbot you choose, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
- Copy Prompt & Open ChatGPT copies DeckMemo's instructions (the prompt) to your clipboard and opens the ChatGPT app, or chatgpt.com if the app isn't installed. Copy Prompt for Another AI only copies the prompt.
- You paste the prompt and share your notes (photos, text or documents) with the chatbot yourself, under your own account. DeckMemo never sends your notes, photos or cards anywhere, and never sees them. What you share with a chatbot is handled by that company under its own privacy policy and terms (for ChatGPT, OpenAI's privacy policy). Check them before sharing anything personal.
- To bring the cards back, you tap Paste, choose a text file, or type into the box. DeckMemo reads your clipboard only when you tap Paste. The cards are read on your device, and nothing is added to your library until you tap Import. Cards you haven't imported yet are kept on your device, so you don't lose them if you switch apps.
DeckMemo isn't made by, affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI or any other chatbot company. Cards written by a chatbot can contain mistakes, so check them before you study.
Permissions
DeckMemo asks only when you use a feature that needs it, and works fully if you decline.
| Permission | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone & Speech Recognition | When you tap Dictate in a Memo | Speech is turned into text with Apple's Speech framework — on the device when supported; otherwise Apple may process the audio under Apple's privacy policy. DeckMemo never records, stores or transmits audio. |
| Photos | When you add an image from Photos | You pick images in Apple's system picker; DeckMemo gets only those images, not your library. Location and other metadata are removed when the image is saved. |
| Camera | When you scan notes on iPhone or iPad | Apple's document scanner captures the pages. Text is recognised entirely on your device with Apple's Vision framework. Scanned photos are not saved; only the cards you choose to create are. |
| Notifications | When you turn on the daily reminder | Reminders are scheduled on your device. Nothing is sent to or from a server. |
| Files | When you import or export | You choose files and save locations with Apple's file browser. |
Sharing and exporting
When you choose Share Decks, Back Up Library or Export, DeckMemo creates a file and hands it to Apple's share sheet or file browser. It goes only where you send it. Shared deck files include your study history only if you turn that on. Files you open are checked on your device before anything is imported.
Children
DeckMemo does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Deleting your data
Delete cards, decks or folders in the app, or use Settings › Erase All Content. With iCloud sync on, deletions also apply to your other devices and your private iCloud database; to remove DeckMemo's iCloud data entirely, use your device's iCloud storage settings (Manage Storage). Deleting the app removes its data from your device. I never receive your data, so there is nothing to delete on my side.
Changes
Updates will be posted here with a new effective date and noted in the app's release notes.
